Golf Metal Hints and tips: A Golf Course Architect's View of the Mental Side of the Game. To be sure, the lone golfer matches wits against the architect, the golf course, and the elements. There are no backups here, no substitutes, just a one-on-one with the course. |

Three of the greatest to ever play the game had mental toughness as their trademark. People may squabble about who is really the best there ever was, but Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus were thinkers extraordinaire, and all produced great victories overseas in spite of adverse conditions. Like many of the foreign players these days who have risen to prominence, these legendary performers were able to mount a mental outlook on the game that provided them with confidence regarding their physical ability to play every shot. This permitted a mental restraining order sufficient to control their emotions and anxieties. Golf course architects should prey on those potential moments of anxiety and pressure; the great golf professional's response is to beat them at that game. |
