If the ball is in sand
some distance from the green (30 to 90 yards), or in a
fairway bunker, hit a standard fairway shot with a
couple of slight adjustments. First, move the ball back
in the stance, as was done with the low shot which will
encourage hitting the ball before the sand. Second,
minimize lower body movement using mostly arms and hands
in an effort to make solid contact with the ball. Take
one longer club than normal, as a little distance might
be lost due to the above adjustments.
On last little
wrinkle: You can't touch the sand with the clubhead
before beginning the backswing on the sandshot. That's
right, the clubhead must hover above the sand the
backswing beginning from a suspended position. No big
problem, you'll get used to it. In fact, you can
practice to do this for virtually all of your shots,
sand, fairways or green.
Golf Tips.
Comparison of soled sand wedge and laid back sand wedge.
The soled sand wedge has the leading edge of clubface in
contact with the ground. In contrast, when the sand
wedge is laid back, the flange of the clubhead is in
contact with the ground while the leading edge of the
clubface is above the ground.
