Golf Putting Instructions and Tips -
Putting Stance
The
beginner is to have a square stance with the feet about
shoulder width apart and the toes of the shoes forming a
line parallel to the target line.
There
are as many variations in stance as in grip when using
the putter. The beginner, however, is best advised to
start out with a square stance with the feet about
shoulder width apart and the toes of the shoes forming a
line parallel to the target line. The ball should be
positioned somewhere between mid-stance and the left
foot, wherever it feels comfortable and encourages the
hitting of the ball along the target line.
Putting Body Position
Stand
close enough to the ball so that the knees can be
flexed, the body curled over and the eyes directly over
the target line.
Stand
close enough to the ball so that the knees can be flexed
and the body curled over, thereby positioning the eyes
directly over the target line (the eyes might be right
over the ball or a little behind it). To determine if
your eyes are truly over the target line, hold a coin at
the bridge of your nose and drop it. If it lands on the
target line, then your eyes are correctly positioned.

Body position for putting. The golfer is curled over
with his eyes directly over the ball and his body
approximating somewhat the form of a question mark.
