Golf Swing Instructions and Tips -
Iron Shots Part 1
Iron
Shots will generally occur at distances of 70 to 200
yards or more from the green.
Iron
shots refer to full shots from the fairway or rough,
using clubs ranging from the wedges and short iron nine,
eight, and seven to the middle irons six, five, and four
and long irons three, two, and one. These shorts will
generally occur at distances of 70 to 200 yards or more
from the green. The technique is the general swing along
with the few subtleties to these clubs:
Iron
Shot Tip 1. There
are two schools of thought on positioning the ball in
the stance when hitting the irons. The simplest method
is to position the ball out form the left heel in the
direction your body is facing for every club in the bag.
A slightly more complex method is to gradually move the
ball back toward the middle of the stance when changing
from the longer to the shorter irons. Fro example, the 2
iron would be positioned at the left heel, whereas the 9
iron and wedge would be positioned in the middle of the
stance. The other irons would be positioned respectively
between those two extremes.
For the
beginner, playing all the shorts at a position in the
stance out from the left heel is recommended. Not only
is this the simpler method, because it takes one
variable out of the game which is the ball position at
the bottom of the swing arc, but it also encourages a
forward weight shift to the left if crisp contact with
the ball is to be achieved.
