Fairway
wood shots refer to full shots from the fairway or rough
with any of the wood or metal wood clubs, including the
driver when it is used without a tee. These shots
generally advance the ball down the fairway until it
gets within range fro an iron shot. Sometimes the green
may be reachable with a fairway wood. In any case, try
to employ a similar amount of precision with these shots
as was the case with the irons.
The ball
is positioned in the stance out from the left heel
similar to a 2 iron. The basic swing applied here;
however, the fairway wood swing may involve a bit more
of a sweeping action versus hitting down into the ball
as might be done with an iron. Simply sweep the club
back and through like a big broom. Or consider image of
swinging a grass sickle, simply clipping off the blades
of grass under the ball with a smooth, flowing stroke.
There is
no need to try to lift the ball into the air with
the fairway woods or with any club, for that matter. The
loft of the clubhead is designed to propel the ball into
the air when it is properly swung through the ball. Any
lifting action on the part of the golfer will only
defeat the aerodynamics of the club.
