The driver is a special club, like
the putter and wedge. Average 80 percent of the shots in a round of
golf are hit with the driver, putter, or wedge. So, just as the
putter and wedge merit extra practice because of their important
roles in the game, a little extra time spent in understanding the
driver is also warranted.
The technique of swinging the
driver is similar to that of swinging the fairway woods. The only
adjustment might be to adjust the stance so that the ball is
positioned an inch or two more forward toward the left toe, because
the ball is now resting on a tee. Addressing the ball in this manner
will encourage striking the ball just as the clubhead begins its
upward movement. This combination of factors will provide a little
more lift and clubhead speed at impact with the ball. If this
adjustment creates a problem, however, it is perfectly fine to
play the ball off the left heel, tee it low, and swing the clubhead
just like a fairway wood.
