The traditional iron
clubs are numbered one through nine and are made of metal in the
shape of a blade Like the weeds, the move from lower to higher
numbered irons brings a gradual increase in loft starting at about
20 degrees and ranging up to about 44 degrees. The 1 and 2 irons,
like the driver, hit the ball quite low and afford some roll when
the ball hits the ground. At the other extreme, the 8 and 9 irons
hit the ball very high, which results in a precipitous drop and very
litter roll after contact with the ground.
Again, one can't
carry all the irons and stay within the 14-club limit. Most golfers
do not carry a 1 iron, and some prefer a 5 wood to a 2 iron, as
their functions overlap to some extent. This is something golfers
get a feel for and decide for themselves once they have played the
game for a while.
