Wild Coast Country Club - South
Africa
Wild Coast
Country Club is routed through a dramatic site in
the Transkei hills, some 80 miles south of Durban on
the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The hotel complex
adjoining the course is built on the edge of the
Umtamvuna River and Thompson's Lagoon. Designed by
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and opened in 1983, the
course is a rugged, untamed journey through narrow
valleys and over ravines brimming with native
vegetation, with the first hole playing above
Thompson's Lagoon. The elevated tees provide views
of the Indian Ocean, while the greens have been
cultivated with grass from Durban Country Club, making
for exceptionally fine putting surfaces.
Durban Country Club - South Africa
Durban Country
Club, just two miles from the downtown Durban
skyline, is South Africa's premier course and one of
the best in the world on any score. The course runs
parallel to the Indian Ocean with its wide sandy
beach, separated only by the coastal highway. The
heaving fairways, built over the coastal sand hills,
crest and dip through indigenous trees and thick
bush. The most famous hole is the par-five third,
with the tee atop a dune and the drive down to the
chute of rolling fairway below. The short par-three
12th is named for the Prince of Wales, who took 17
shots when he played here in 1924. Durban was
designed in 1922 by the South African professional
Laurie Waters working with George Waterman Waters
had been an assistant to Old Tom Morris at St.
Andrews before emigrating to South Africa in 1901
for his health.
