Hans Merensky Country Club and Lost City Golf Course, South Africa

Hans Merensky Country Club - South Africa

Hans Merensky Country Club is located in Phalaborwa in South Africa's Limpopo or Northern Province. The course is laid out in the bush veld adjoining the famous Kruger National Park, which runs along the entire length of the Hans Merensky Estate's eastern boundary. The course is South Africa's ultimate golfin-the-wild experience, set in the estate that includes an elegantly landscaped, thatched-roof hotel and its own private game reserve. The wildlife wandering the course includes giraffes, lions, warthogs, hippos, and several varieties of antelope. Originally established by the Phalaborwa Mining Company, the course was designed in 1966 by Bob Grirnsdell and is beautifully maintained, with tranquil ponds and native trees. While efforts were made in the past to build fences to keep wildlife off the course, these proved unsuccessful and golfers must be wary of the big game, particularly elephants and buffalo.

Lost City Golf Course - South Africa

The Lost City Golf Course is one of two courses designed by Gary Player at Sun City, the lavish playground and casino built by Sol Kerzner in South Africa's North West Province. The desert-style, boulder-strewn course lies beneath the hills of the Pilanesberg bushveld, with the backdrop of the domed towers of the Palace of the Lost City, a fantasy of African fable turned into stunning reality. The ninth and 18th holes both circle the central lake, and several holes on the back nine adjoin the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The green of the par-three 13th is in the shape of the African continent, with each of the three bunkers filled with a different color sand to symbolize the country's racial diversity. The hazard just left of the green is home to some 40 crocodiles.
