Golf and Country Club Gut Altentan - Austria
Gut AItentann,
Austria's top-rated course, lies in Henndorf am
Waller see, just six miles north of Salzburg, the
hometown of Mozart. Founded in 1986, the course was
Jack Nicklaus's first design foray into Europe. Like
many of his designs, Gut Altentann is a robust
layout, spread out over rustic, rumpled pastures and
glades of alpine trees, with rock-laden lakes and
streams coming into play. The property is one of
historic interest, occupied by the Mondsee Monastery
as far back as 785. The present-day clubhouse occupies the site of the manor house in
which the archbishop and curates once lived, which
was expanded over the years into the imposing Gut Altentann
castle. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1680. In
1990, Gut Altentann hosted the inaugural Austrian
Open, won by Bernhard Langer
in a playoff with Lanny Wadkins.
Dachstein-Tauern Golf and Country Club - Austria
Dachstein-Tauern Golf and Country Club is located
outside the attractive old town of Schladming in the
Austrian Alps. Designed by Bernhard Langer and
opened in 1988, the course has an almost Floridian
flavor, with fairways curving around a shimmering,
fountain-filled lagoon. There are commanding views
of the Dachstein peaks to distract the golfer.
Better known as a ski resort, the four separate
mountains have now been linked by lifts and trails.
