Perched
5000 - 6000 ft above sea level, the highest golf course
in Southeast Asia is located on the foothill of the
majestic Mount Kinabalu, in Pinosuk Plateau Ranau
District, about 2 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu.
Designed by Robert Muir Graves, the famous golf course
architect from California, the layout is visually
appealing, but can turn into a 'graveyard' for miscued
shor.
This
18-hole layout with the powerful presence of the
mountain is indeed felt everywhere. It provides a
magnificent backdrop to the golf course. The climate is
more temperate than tropical, on a clear. day promises
the experience of cool highlands golfing.
Playing
6,369 m Par 72 from the back tees, this course must be
rated as a course to rest your physical and mental
fitness and of course your golfing skills. The
challenging fairways are criss-crossed with seemingly
harmless cold gurgling streams. Huge bunkers are
plentiful here. Accuracy is the key to this highland
course. Any careless clubbing can land the golfer into
the watery and sandy traps, or into the OBs which are
deep ravines, falling as deep as 2000 ft, bordering the
fairways.
Indeed,
Mount Kinabalu is an ideal glare
way for the golfer who fancies golfing in the clouds,
literally. Playing a challenging round at this course is
a must-visit.
