Golf Courses - The Gary Player Country Club and Emirates Golf Course

The Gary Player Country Club, South Africa.

South Africa golf course The Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, Pilanesberg, North-West Province, South Africa.

Sun City is an interesting course laid out by Gary Player and Ronald Kirby on the floor of an extinct volcano. The course was cut from thorn scrub and bush and is best known for promoting the $1,000,000 challenge which, when it started, was the richest tournament in the world. Nowadays, as prizes have grown higher, the tournament has lost some of its interest. The course is very long and for championship play can be stretched to 7,650 yards (7,000 m).

Emirates Golf Course, Dubai.

United Arab Republic golf course Emirates, Dubai.

The Dubai Desert Classic is now held annually on the Emirates course, which was designed and laid out by Karl Litten. It is one of the early events of the European tour. The course is watered by a lavish sprinkler system with 500 sprinkler heads spraying nearly a million gallons of water on the course every twenty-four hours. The course is a triumph of man over nature and the classic is now a much respected event. Fred Couples won there in 1995 and Colin Montgomerie won in 1996 with a sensational shot from the fairway with his driver to birdie the 72nd hole.
