St-Nom-La-Breteche Golf Course, France
France golf course
St-Nom-La-Breteche, Versailles, Paris.
St-Nom-la-Breteche
course was designed by Fred Hawtree and is one of the
most popular in France. It is situated just outside
Versailles near Paris and has hosted the Lancome Trophy
for many years. It was the scene of the World Cup
in
1963 when it was won for the USA by Arnold Palmer and
Jack Nicklaus, a pretty powerful combination. It has
also held the French Open on a number of occasions.
When he was
a young player Bobby Jones was a great talker on the
course. Playing with Harry Vardon in the US Open of
1920, Jones played a bad pitch shot which ran through
the green.
"Did you ever
see a worse shot than that, Harry?" he asked.
"No," replied
Vardon.
The" round was finished in silence.
