Harbour Plaza Golf Club - China
Harbour Plaza Golf Club is located in Dongguan
(Canton), almost midway between Shenzen and Guanzhou,
and a 30-minute drive from the Fu Yong Pier, where
the Turbo Cat ferry arrives from Hong Kong. Designed
by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course consists of
three nines, Lake, Valley, and Lychee. The Lake nine
runs along the large Hwang Gang Reservoir, with the
third, fourth, and fifth holes playing along the
wetlands. The Valley and Lychee nines loop around a
series of interlocking ponds and are framed by green
mountains and terraced Iychee nurseries.
Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club - China
Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club opened in 1984,
making it the first golf course built in China in
the Communist era. It now boasts two of the most
highly regarded courses in a booming Chinese golf
market, the original course designed by Arnold
Palmer, and the second by Jack Nicklaus, opened in
1993. The courses straddle the hills of Shenzen
Province, a half-hour drive from the border near
Macau. The Nicklaus course, the more challenging of
the two, slopes across either
side of a 1,000-foot high peak, and like many Nicklaus layouts, it has a roomy, full-cut feel to
it, with more than 90 large, terraced bunkers.
