Gavea Golf and Country Club and Terravista Golf Course, Brazil

Gavea Golf and Country Club - Brazil

Gavea Golf and Country Club lies on the coast south of Rio de Janeiro, beyond Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. As Sir Peter Allen put it: "The location of Gavea-which Herbert Warren Wind tells us means Crow's Nest-is spectacular in the extreme as it is dominated by the huge monolithic Rock of Gavea which hangs 2,000 feet over the course like a great monster," The first nine holes and the final four are laid out through the hills, while the remaining five run through the palms and the fLat sandy stretch near the shore. The second-oldest golf club in Brazil, Gavea was founded in 1923 by a group of Scots and Englishmen, with the course laid out by Arthur Morgan Davidson, a young assistant professional from Peterhead in Scotland, who continued as the pro for another 20 years.

Terravista Golf Course - Brazil

Terravista Golf Course is part of a new resort located in the Brazilian state of Bahia, a 90-minute flight north from Sao Paulo to Porto Seguro and then a 50 minute drive or, if you prefer, a ferry ride across the bay to Arraial D' Ajuda and a short drive to Trancoso. Terravista may not be easy to get to, but it is worth the journey, with spectacular holes spread out across the tabletop of the wrinkled sandstone cliffs that soar above the white sand beaches of the Atlantic. The 12th through 15th holes all run along the 120-foot high cliffs. This high wire act of a golf course, completed in 2004, was designed by Dan Blankenship, an American who worked with Pete and Perry Dye on the Course at the Rio beach resort of Buzios, and decided to settle in Brazil. Trancoso is a tranquil fishing village and one of the earliest Portuguese settlements in Brazil, dating from 1586.
