Laguna Bintan Golf Club and Nirwana Bali Golf Club, Indonesia

Laguna Bintan Golf Club - Indonesia

The Indonesian island of Bintan has become a major golf destination, with a string of tropical courses running along the north coast of the kidney-shaped island facing the South China Sea. Reached by a 45-minute ferry ride from Singapore aboard a high-speed catamaran, the Ria Bintan Golf Club (part of Club Med Ria Bintan) has two courses designed by Gary Player, the Ocean Course and Forest Course. Further east, the Laguna Bintan Golf Club, designed by Greg Norman, spans forest, wetlands, beachfront holes rimmed by boulders, and an abandoned quarry. It is part of the Banyan Tree Resort. The Bintan Lagoon Resort offers the Jack Nicklaus Sea View Course, with the lovely par-three 12th caressing the South China Sea and the green of the 13th actually split by a stream, as well as the hillier Woodlands Course designed by Ian Baker-Finch.

Nirwana Bali Golf Club - Indonesia

Nirwana Bali Golf Club is located on the southwest coast of Bali, a 30-minute drive from Kuta. Opened in 1997 and designed by Aussie great Greg Norman and Bob Harrison, the course is the centerpiece of the Nirwana Bali Resort. The layout combines spectacular cliff holes running alongside the Indian Ocean with hazards formed by terraced rice paddies typical of the lush Balinese countryside, beginning with the seven rows of staggered rice paddies that descend down the hill to the left of the first tee. The fantasy hole par-three seventh plays across the inlet of the sea to a green mounted on a vine-draped cliff, facing the sacred Hindu sea temple of Tanah Lot that is perched on a rocky pedestal in the ocean 200 yards further down the coastline. Nirwana's female caddies come from the neighboring villages and receive an intensive three-month training program.
