The Quarry Golf Club - Texas, U.S.A.
The Quarry Golf Club, located near the San
Antonio airport, is a sterling example of a golf
course as a successful environmental reclamation
project. Opened in 1993, the course is the first
solo design of Keith Foster, a longtime associate of
Arthur Hills. Routed through an abandoned limestone
quarry, the front nine is laid out over 80 acres of
land that was covered by kiln dust that had to be
sealed in clay vaults. Lakes were excavated and the
fill used to create the fairways. The back nine is a
show-stopping tour through the too-acre quarry,
boxed in by 80- to too-foot-high vertical walls. The
quarry floor is sprinkled with native grasses,
creased by chasms crossed by narrow bridges, and
dominated by a lake tied directly to the San Antonio
aquifer that comes into play on the 12th and 13th
holes.
Shadow Hawk Golf Club - Texas, U.S.A.
Shadow Hawk
Golf Club is a private club in Richmond, a suburb of
Houston. Opened in November 1999, Shadow Hawk's
honorary members include the senior President George
Bush. Designed by Rees Jones, the Course is enclosed
by oaks, mesquite, and mature pecan trees. Adjoining
Shadow Hawk is the Houstonian, a public course
designed by Jones, creating a powerful one-two
punch. The dominant feature of the Houstonian is a
natural oxbow lake that comes into play on the 13th
through 17th holes, with the 17th a par-three that
plays across the lake. The head pro at Shadow Hawk
is Paul Marchand, one of the game's most respected
teachers.
