Visalia Country Club and Vista Valencia Golf Course, California

VISALIA COUNTRY CLUB (1922)

CENTRAL VALLEY REGION

Members only - 18 hole

625 Ranch Road, Visalia, CA 93291

Tel: (559) 734-1458

Designed by Desmond Muirhead (remodel). The front nine is a tight, stadium-style course, where accurate drives are at a premium. The back nine dates back to the 1920s. It is more user friendly, so an accurate driver is not as critical. However, the greens tend to be smaller and are deceptive. The real key to scoring well at Visalia is course knowledge. Reciprocal play with other membersonly clubs is allowed. From within Visalia: Off Highway 99, take the Visalia exit east. Go three stoplights and turn left onto West Main. Turn left again on Ranch Road, and follow it to the end.

VISTA VALENCIA GOLF COURSE (1962)

LOS ANGELES REGION

Municpal - 27 hole - cost: $18 - $30

24700 West Trevino Drive, Valencia, CA 91355

Tel: (661) 253-1870

Designed by unknown. With lots of trees, water, and traps, Vista Valencia is an executive course with a bite. The 11 par 3s demand accuracy. Miss the greens and you will have a difficult time getting up and down for par. The par-3 course is best suited for those learning the game. From downtown Los Angeles (about 33 miles north to the course): Go north on I-5 and exit at Lyons Avenue. Travel east and turn left on Wiley Canyon Road. Turn left on Tourney Road, then drive onehalf mile to make another left, onto Trevino Road, to the course. Plenty of other choices in the area for the serous golfer, but its proximity to Magic Mountain gives it a major plus.
