Muir Graves, Damian Pascuzzo. Sterling Hills is a
rarity among newer golf courses. You can actually
walk this course. The fairways give you plenty of
room for error, and the greens are big and sweeping.
The course is interesting and entertaining, but not
punishing. Although walkable, carts are mandatory
until 1 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
From Ventura (about 17 miles southeast to the course):
Take US 101 south to Camarillo. Exit at Central
Avenue and drive east one mile to Beardsley. Make a
right and drive another mile. The course is on the
right. A great value all things considered. Of
course, to offer lower fees, the club has to put out
more golfers, so it can get a touch crowded. The
greens are still exceedingly firm, more in line with
a course that just opened, not one open for nearly
two years.

Stevinson's landscape is distinct for its vast open
areas of grasslands, scattered trees, and marsh
areas. Its exceptional bunkering and links-feel make
for an excellent test of your skills. Cottages are
available for those who want to stay and play. From
Modesto (about 30 miles south to the course): Drive
south on Highway 99, take Lander Avenue exit, and
turn right. Drive about nine miles on Lander Avenue.
Turn left on Westside Boulevard and follow the
signs. Stevinson Ranch is a great course that can
have a nasty disposition when the wind blows. Highly
recommend the course, and if you have a few days,
the on-site Golf School is top-notch.
