PLUMAS LAKE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB (1926)

GOLD COUNTRY REGION

Semi-Private - 18 hole - cost: $14 - $26

1551 Country Club Avenue, Marysville, CA 95901

Tel: (530) 742-3201

Designed by Bob Baldock. This is a tight, scenic course where trees, homes, condos, and hazards can consume golf balls. From Sacramento (about 40 miles north to the course): Take Highway 99 north to Highway 70 north. Right before Marysville, exit at Feather River Boulevard and turn left under the freeway. After about six and one-half miles, turn left on Country Club Avenue.

PLUMAS PINES GOLF RESORT (1980)

HIGH SIERRA REGION

Resort: 18 hole - cost: $40 - $80

402 Poplar Valley Road, Graeagle, CA 96103

Tel: (530) 836-1420

Designed by Homer Flint. The greens are usually quick, but it is the rolling, narrow, tree-lined fairways that keep golfers honest. Hitting a driver off the tee is not always your best option. From Truckee (about 52 miles northwest to the course): Off I-80, take Highway 89 north to Graeagle. Turn left on A 14 and follow it for two miles; then turn right on Poplar Valley Road. The golf course is at the end of the road, on the right. On a few holes we forgot about the golf and were entranced with the beauty of the surroundings. Hey, after two double bogeys in a row, you have to live for something.

POINT MUGU GOLF CLUB (1963)

CENTRAL COAST REGION

Military/Public : 9 hole - cost: $11 - $15

NAWS, Building 153, Point Mugu, CA 93042

Tel: (805) 989-7109

Designed by Marlin Cox. Located on an air base, this is a meadow course with nine holes, but 18 sets of tee boxes. The course is open for public play. From west Los Angeles (about 47 miles northwest to the course): Take the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) west to the Pacific Coast Highway. Take the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) north toward Camarillo. Take the Wood Road/USN Point Mugu exit. Proceed to the gate for a pass and directions.
