OLYMPIC CLUB, THE (1919)

BAY AREA REGION

Members only: 45 hole

Off Skyline Boulevard, Oaly City, CA 94015

Tel: (415) 587-8338

Designed by Sam Whiting, Tom Weiskopf, Jay Morrish. The Lakeside Course is one of the west's great championship layouts. This hillside course plays longer than the yardage. Overhanging trees and small bunkered greens make it punitive in nature. While the Ocean Course is often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, the Ocean Course is perhaps more interesting and scenic. It can play deceptively difficult and should be considered among the state's best. The Cliffs Course features dramatic flashed bunkering, a vast array of floral background, and spectacular views of the Pacific. They combine to create an All-World; nine-hole par-3 layout.  The yardage listed is for the Lakeside Course. From the Golden Gate Bridge southbound: Take the 19th Avenue exit. Turn right on Sloat and then left on Skyline Boulevard. The club is on the left, past Funston.

ORINDA COUNTRY CLUB (1927)

BAY AREA REGION

Members only - 18 hole

315 Camino Sobrante, Orinda, CA 94563

Tel: (925) 254-0811

Designed by Willie Watson. You can pretty much give your driver the day off. This is a short, narrow, tree-lined course with diminutive greens. Orinda will give up low scores provided you keep it in the fairway. Reciprocal play with other members-only clubs is allowed. From San Francisco (about 17 miles east to the course): Take I-80 east to Highway 24 toward Walnut Creek. Take the Orinda exit and go left. Turn right on Camino Sobrante. At the end, turn left on EI Robero. Turn left to get onto Camino Sobrante again.
