Monterey Peninsula Country Club and Monterey Pines Golf Course, California

MONTEREY PENINSULA COUNTRY CLUB (1926)

CENTRAL COAST REGION

Members only - 36 hole

3000 Club Road, Pebble Beach, CA 93953

Tel: (831) 372-8141

Designed by Bob Baldock (Shore), Seth Raynor (Dunes), Rees Jones (remodel). The Dunes Course combines the best of forest and oceanside golf to make what is one of the state's most underrated layouts. Recent renovations have made the course more difficult, especially for the average golfer. The Shore Course plays in the open, adjacent to 17-Mile Drive. The layout is simple and understated. The yardage listed is for the Dunes Course. From within Monterey: Take the Pebble Beach exit off Highway 1. Follow the signs to the Pebble Beach gate. The guard gives further directions from there.

MONTEREY PINES GOLF COURSE (1963)

CENTRAL COAST REGION

Public - 18 hole - cost: $10 - $24

1250 Garden Road, Monterey, CA 93943

Tel: (831) 656-2167

Designed by Robert Muir Graves. As its name would suggest, the Monterey pines are the distinguishing feature for this flattish, relatively simple layout. Small, well-maintained greens make scoring more of a challenge than the yardage might suggest. This is a prior military course that still offers discounts for those in the service. From within Monterey: From Highway 1 north take the Casa Verde exit and turn right Turn right on Fairgrounds Road. Turn left at the light on Mark Thomas/Garden Road.
