Bass Lake Golf Course and Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Course, California

BASS LAKE GOLF COURSE (1996)

GOLD COUNTRY REGION

Public - 18 hole - cost: $20 - $25

3000 Alexandrite Drive, Rescue, GA 95672

Tel: (530) 677-4653

Designed by Gene Thorne, Golf Plan. The front nine is narrow and level, with plenty of oaks and pines. The eighth hole is a 200-yard par 3 over a lake. The back nine is more open, rolling, and has a links feel. A word of advice: If you are going to miss the greens, be short rather than long. To really score well, course knowledge is key. The property was used for gold mining in the 1850s, and the lake on the eighth hole was used as a watering hole for the pony express and stage coach lines. From Sacramento (about 25 miles east to the course): Take US 50 east to Bass Lake Road. Go north on Bass Lake Road, which turns into Alexandrite Drive, and runs into the course.

BAYONET/BLACKHORSE GOLF COURSE (1954)

CENTRAL COAST REGION

Municipal: 36 hole - cost: $50 - $97

One McGlure Way, Seaside, GA 93955

Tel: (831) 899-7271

Designed by Gen. Robert Mc Clure, Gen. Edwin Carns. Good players have long recognized that the Bayonet Course is one of the most demanding in the entire state. Closely tree lined, its sloping fairways and smallish greens are intimidating to the careless shot-maker. Blackhorse is similar in nature, but does not have the distance of Bayonet. The course affords many excellent ocean views. Yardage listed is for Bayonet. Carts are mandatory on weekends before noon. From Monterey (about five miles northeast to the course): Go north on Highway 1. Take the Fort Ord main entrance exit. Go straight when exiting the freeway. There are signs to the right. Both courses are mustplays. For those with higher handicaps, we recommend Blackhorse. The layout is not easy, but less severe and is in excellent condition - even better.
