Bakersfield Country Club and Balboa Park Golf Course, California

BAKERSFIELD COUNTRY CLUB (1950)

CENTRAL VALLEY REGION

Members only - 18 hole

4200 Country Club Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93306

Tel: (661) 871-4121

Designed by William P. Bell. This traditional layout is built on a hillside. With four par 4s over 400 yards and several long par 5s, accurate and long drives are a good start. The course, however, is not one dimensional and requires golfers to be adept at every aspect of their game. Reciprocal play with other members-only clubs is allowed. From within Bakersfield: Off Highway 99, take Highway 178 east for six miles. Take the Oswell Street exit and then turn right to Country Club Drive.

BALBOA PARK GOLF COURSE (1921)

SAN DIEGO REGION

Municipal - 27 hole - cost: $20 - $40

2600 Golf Course Drive, San Diego, CA 92102

Tel: (619) 239-1660

Designed by William P. Bell. Balboa is a hilly, walkable course. The fairways on the front nine are fairly tight with small greens. On the back nine, errant drives will usually find another fairway. The nine-hole executive course is short and presents little challenge for the low handicapper. From within San Diego: Off I-5, take the Pershing Drive exit and head east to 26th Street. Turn right and then turn left on Golf Course Drive, to the club. The executive course is recommended for beginners and for golfers who have had the shanks and are in need of rehab.
