BADLANDS GOLF CLUB (1995)

DESERT REGION

Semi-Private: 27 hole - cost: $80 - $190

9119 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89145

Tel: (702) 363-0754

Designed by Johnny Miller, Chi Chi Rodriguez. This is a spectacular 27-hole layout cut out of gullies. The courses play through deep washes, so if you are not in the fairway, you are in the badlands. The greens are fairly small by today's standards, but in excellent shape. The courses are the Diablo, Outlaw, and Desperado. The club warns of snakes outside the fairways. By the looks of all the golf balls lying around in plain sight, they must be telling the truth. The yardage listed below is for the Desperado/Diablo combination. From the Las Vegas Airport (about 1 5 miles northwest to the course): Take I-15 north to US 95 north. Exit onto Summerlin Parkway. Take the Rampart Boulevard exit and go left (south). Turn right on Alta Drive. The club is on the left. You may love it, you may hate it, but you won't forget it.

BAILEY CREEK GOLF COURSE (2000)

SHASTA CASCADE REGION

Public - 18 hole - cost: $30 - $63

433 Durkin Drive, Lake Almanor, CA 96137

Tel: (530) 259-4653

Designed by Homer Flint. Forested, undulating terrain, complete with sweeping mounding, expansive bunkering, and large putting surfaces make for a very playable and attractive golf course. Overnight accommodations are available at Bailey Creek. From Chico (about 80 miles northeast to the course): Take Highway 32 east about 55 miles to Highway 36. Make a right and drive to Chester. Turn right on County Road A 13 (Walker Road) and then another right on Clifford Drive to the gate. Turn right on Durkin Drive and the course is on the left. This is a scenic course that is well worth playing.
