Advice for the golf course visitors

It often feels like you need a special handshake to get into some golf courses. Clubs tend to be protective of their courses, much as a child guards his or her favorite toy. Provided you have a handicap and are clear on golf etiquette, there are just a few simple rules to smooth the way.

The majority of the courses listed in the book require visitors to contact the club in advance and be able to produce a handicap certificate on the day of play. That is normally sufficient. When approaching some of the more exclusive courses, it is recommended that you write a letter of introduction direct to the secretary or organize a letter of introduction from your own club secretary.

With the exception of a very few clubs, there is nothing to stop you playing the best courses in the country, provided you follow these basic instructions. If you do not have a handicap, then the best advice is to follow the normal procedures and hope for the best - you may be asked to prove your ability when you arrive at the club.

Clubs have many competition and society days during the year, so find out the best days for visitors before you go. If you just turn up at the door, you may be disappointed. Also, gentlemen should remember to pack a jacket and tie, as many clubs have a dress code in the bar and dining room.

Good golfing!
