A USGA Handicap Index
represents the potential ability of a
golfer could score on a
course of standard difficulty (slop
rating of 113).
A
USGA Handicap Index represents the potential ability of
a golfer
could score on a course of standard difficulty.
Golf course with standard difficulty is assigned slope
rating of 113 by USGA. USGA Course slope rating
measured the difficulty of a golf course relative to the
golf course of standard difficulty.
The USGA Handicap Index is
calculate based on the best handicap differentials in a
player's scoring recorded. If
a player's scoring record
contains 20 or more scores, then the best 10 handicap
differentials of the more recent 20 scores are used
to calculated his USGA Handicap Index.

A
handicap differential is computed from four elements,
namely Adjusted Gross Score, USGA Course Rating, USGA Slop Rating
and constant number 113 (represent course with standard difficulty)
as shown in the formula below:
USGA Handicap
Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score - USGA Course Rating) x 113 /
USGA Slope Rating
Note: USGA Course
Rating and USGA Slope Rating are available from individual golf
course score card.
A gross score
is the number of actual strokes plus any penalty strokes taken by a
player.
Adjusted gross
score refer to a score after adjusted for any unfinished holes
based on the potential scoring.
USGA Course
Rating is the USGA's mark that indicates the evaluation of the
playing difficulty of a course for scratch golfers under normal
course and weather conditions.
USGA Slope Rating
is the USGA's mark that indicates the measurement of the relative
difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers
compared to the Course Rating(ie. Compared to the difficulty of the
course for scratch golfers). The lowest Slope Rating is 55, and the
highest is 155. A golf course of standard playing difficulty has a
USGA Slope Rating of 113.
Male scratch golfer refer to an amateur golfer who can
hit the tee shots an average of 250 yards and reach 470
yard par four hole in two shots.
Female scratch golfer
can hit an average of 210 yards and put the golf ball on
green for 400 yard par four hole in two shots.
Male bogey golfer
refer to an amateur golfer who can hit
an average of 200 yard tee shots and reach a 370 yards
par four hole in two shots, has USGA Handicap Index of
17.5 to 22.4.
Female bogey golfer
refer to an amateur
golfer who can hit an average of 150 yards tee shots and
reach 280 yards par four hole in two shots, has USGA
Handicap Index of 21.5 to 26.4.
A Course Handicap
Table is a chart that converts a USGA Handicap Index to a Course
Handicap based on the USGA Slope Rating for the set of tees played.
A Course Handicap
represent the golfer potential scoring on particular golf course. It
is determined by converting golfer USGA Handicap Index using Course
Handicap Table.
