A USGA Handicap Index represents the potential ability of a golfer could score on a course of standard difficulty. Golf course with standard difficulty is assigned slope rating of 113 by USGA. USGA Course slope rating measured the difficulty of a golf course relative to the golf course of standard difficulty.

A gross score is the number of actual strokes plus any penalty strokes taken by a player.

Compared to the difficulty of the course for scratch golfers). The lowest Slope Rating is 55, and the highest is 155. A golf course of standard playing difficulty has a USGA Slope Rating of 113.
